Drawing

The Forum Magnum or just the Forum) was the central area around which ancient Rome developed, in which commerce and the administration of justice took place.

The forum became a marketplace. On each side there was a row of tabernae — the older, the veteres, on the south side, facing away from the sun; while another row, the novae, was later on placed on the opposite side. Games were held here as well as festivals and funerals. Justice was administered here, and it naturally became a public place, first for business, for politics and popular assemblies, and later on for idleness or amusement.
