Vibroacoustic Disease

The research that systematically defined Vibro-Acoustic Syndrome as a disease entity (VAD), had its origins in Portugal, where a large number of afflicted aviation industry workers were studied by Dr. Nuno A. Castelo-Branco. After more than a decade of preliminary research, the Portuguese Air Force funded the creation of a laboratory dedicated to this important effort.

The  first international congress ever assembled to examine the information available, the research findings, and the options to take with this illness, convened in Lisbon 1991, sponsored by the International Institute for Human Performance

The first peer-reviewed scientific publication appeared in the Journal of Aviation, Space and Environmental Medicine in March 1999 (Vol. 70 No. 3, Section II, Supplement). The supplement has twenty-three scientific papers and a commentary by Ensor Rodriguez, M.D., Ph. D., who also co-authored several of the papers published in the supplement.
